Gateway is the third full-length album by stoner metal band Bongzilla. It was released in September 2002 by Relapse Records. The title of the album is a reference to the term gateway drug, used to describe an apparently more-benign drug that can lead to the use of more dangerous drugs. Hashdealer With a Sabbath-on-downer-encrusted sound that blends billowing rock, clenched-teeth blues and an underground punk attitude, psychedelic sludgecore masters Bongzilla fire up thunderous mega-rock with a pronounced emphasis on the big riff. Gateway showcases a Bongzilla sound fertilized tenfold - simultaneously aggressive and mellow - with thunderous percussion, smoke-seared vocals and infectious, fuzzed-out riffs bak. Mean 'n' green bludgeon rock, '70s style, is the name of the game with Gateway, Bongzilla's second full-length, which doesn't even try to separate itself from the overused stoner rock tag. Regardless, Gateway proves that there's plenty of hemp-fueled joy in sludgeville, derivative as it may be, sounding like a cross between Sleep's drowsy, Black Sabbathy meanderings and Electric WizardBurning Witch-style gut-curdling, muddy sludge. Bongzilla - Gateway review: Fun, heavy, and really, really stoned. As anyone would expect of a metal album, it's heavy. The vocals aren't the clean sound of early Electric Wizard or Sleep, but they strike a happy medium between complete normalcy and gutteral, death metal vocals, like a slightly more raspy version of some of Dopethrone's more aggressive tracks. But despite the booming sound, they never go anywhere near the doomy theatrics of Candlemass or Eyehategod. Listen free to Bongzilla Gateway Greenthumb, Stone a Pig and more. 8 tracks 43:51.
