The program, which is approximately 30 minutes long, appears on both sides of the cassette. The tape begins with a short preface by Robert Elder, who recorded Clark Ashton Smith reading these poems in the late 1950's. The 18 page booklet included with the tape reproduces the texts of the poems read.

Clark Ashton Smith: Live from Auburn: The Elder Tapes. In the late 1950s Smith recorded a number of his poems on the tape-recorder of his friend Robert B. Elder chose the 11 poems at random from Smith's books The Dark Chateau and Spells and Philtres. Elder had first met Smith when reporting on his 1954 wedding to the former Carol Dorman for The Auburn Courier and they became friends when Smith praised Elder's novel Whom the Gods Destroy. Clark Ashton Smith was a poet, sculptor, painter and author of fantasy, horror and science fiction short stories. It is for these stories, and his literary friendship with H. Lovecraft from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937, that he is mainly remembered today. With Lovecraft and Robert E. Clark Ashton Smith was born on January 13th, 1893, and began writing fiction and poetry in his early teens. His first publication came in 1910, at the age of seventeen, when the Overland Monthly published two of his adventure tales set in the Orient. One of the Lovecraft circle and a regular contributor to Weird Tales in the 1930s, he is highly regarded today for his works of exotic fantasy. Smith died in his sleep on August 14, 1961.
